What Is Fire Safety Engineering?

Engineering the fire safety strategy across the full design lifecycle

Fire safety engineering applies engineering principles to the design and assessment of fire safety in buildings. Chartered fire safety engineers analyse how fire and smoke behave, how occupants respond and evacuate, and how structural elements perform under fire — and design a strategy delivering the required level of life safety.

Unlike prescriptive compliance, fire engineering considers specific building characteristics and can propose tailored solutions for atria, deep basements, heritage buildings, and unusual layouts.

Fire Safety Services provides independent fire engineering consultancy at every RIBA stage. Our advice is entirely independent: we do not install, manufacture, or supply fire safety products.

Standards Framework
BS 7974 / PD 7974
The principal UK framework for performance-based fire engineering.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

What do fire safety engineers do?
Chartered fire safety engineers design, analyse, and manage fire safety strategies for buildings. They develop life safety strategies, assess compliance, produce fire strategies and specifications, support planning and building control submissions, and provide independent advice.
When should a fire engineer be appointed?
Ideally at RIBA Stage 0 or 1. Early appointment establishes fire safety objectives before design begins, reducing costly changes later.
What is performance-based fire engineering?
An approach that demonstrates fire safety compliance through analysis and modelling rather than prescriptive guidance. Used for buildings where prescriptive solutions cannot be applied or would unnecessarily constrain design.
Are your engineers chartered?
Yes. IFE membership and other relevant chartered engineering body membership. Up to £5M professional indemnity insurance.
